Requiescat in Pace: Sister Marian Sartain, O.P.

Sister Marian Sartain, O.P., a member of the Dominican Sisters of St. Cecilia Congregation in Nashville for 60 years, died July 1, 2025. She was 78 years old. Born in Memphis, Tennessee, Sister Marian was the daughter of the late Joseph and Catherine Poole Sartain. After graduating from St. Thomas Academy, she entered the Dominican Sisters in 1965, making profession of vows in 1967. Sister Marian served as a teacher and principal in Catholic Schools in Virginia, Ohio, and Tennessee, including at St. Cecilia Academy and Aquinas College in Nashville. Many of her students remember her great kindness and patience as she shared the truths of the faith with them. Within the congregation she also served as novice mistress, director of education, secretary general, and a member of the general council for many years. In addition to these responsibilities, she was often found in the chapel reading Scripture and interceding for all who had asked for her prayers. She is survived by her sisters Jenny (Steve) Alexander, Marie Looney, Sally Hermsdorfer, and brother, Archbishop J. Peter Sartain as well as aunts Hilda Poole and Margaret Vucina, and many other loving relatives in Tennessee, Alabama, and Florida. Visitation will be held at St. Cecilia Motherhouse on Wednesday, July 2 from 6-8 p.m. and Thursday, July 3 at 2:30. The funeral Mass will follow at 3:30.
