St. Thomas Midtown Hospital

We have to regard ourselves as sealed, even branded, by this mission of bringing light, blessing, enlivening, raising up, healing and freeing. All around us we begin to see nurses with soul, teachers with soul, politicians with soul, people who have chosen deep down to be with others and for others. …If we are to share our lives with others and generously give of ourselves, we also have to realize that every person is worthy of our giving. Not for their physical appearance, their abilities, their language, their way of thinking, or for any satisfaction that we might receive, but rather because they are God’s handiwork, his creation. God created that person in his image, and he or she reflects something of God’s glory. Every human being is the object of God’s infinite tenderness, and he himself is present in their lives. (Evangelii Gaudium 273, 274)

As a Catholic hospital, Saint Thomas Midtown Hospital in Nashville provides healthcare to all people regardless of language, class, color, or religion. Given that suffering is a shared human experience, it is a blessing to be able to provide excellent care for the homeless and marginalized of society alongside the wealthy and influential. Through the ministry of nursing, our sisters have the unique privilege of helping patients walk with Christ throughout all stages of life. One sister commented, “I desire the health and well-being of each patient I serve, and at the same time I marvel at the miracles God performs in people’s hearts as they allow God to draw them closer to Himself through the suffering they endure.”

In an address to women religious, Pope Francis commented that the smile of a religious woman opens hearts. Our sisters have found this to be particularly true. As graduates of Aquinas College’s nursing program which excels in teaching how to provide superior nursing care while safeguarding the dignity of the person, our sisters care not just for the physical ills but also for the spiritual needs of their patients. As consecrated religious, they see Christ in every person they encounter at the hospital. The Dominican Sisters are grateful for the opportunity to serve at Saint Thomas Midtown Hospital.
