At the
invitation of the Director of the Confraternity for Christian Doctrine,
today we attended the annual Mass in honor of catechists at Saint Mary’s
Cathedral. The Mass included recognition for all who had served as
catechists for 20, 25, and 40 years. Catechists in Australia are people
who complete theological training to volunteer their services in the
public schools for catechesis. To meet hundreds of generous people
committed to such a challenging task was inspiring.
Cardinal George
Pell, the archbishop of Sydney, was the main celebrant. After Mass, we
looked forward to the long-awaited opportunity to meet the Cardinal and
greet him on behalf of the Congregation. He expressed his pleasure at
having us in the archdiocese and his hope that our stay in Sydney would be
a wonderful one.
