Today we visited the central office
of the Catholic Education Office of Sydney in Leichhardt… The team is
truly impressive, impassioned about Catholic Education and especially
about the opportunity to support World Youth Day by catechetical tools and
resources. They, like everyone we have met, expressed joy at welcoming us
to Sydney.
As we toured the building, we learned
of the building’s rich history. In 1884, it was purchased by Cardinal
Moran and became the temporary home of the Little Sisters of the Poor. In
1888, the home was given to Mother Mary MacKillop, and the Sisters of
Saint Joseph established there a convent and girls’ school called Saint
Martha’s. The Sisters remained until 1982, and then the building was
established as the Catholic Schools Office in 1983. Blessed Mary visited
the Sisters in Leichhardt, and we were blessed to walk the stone path to
the entrance where this saintly Australian walked decades ago. Blessed
Mary MacKillop, pray for us!
