New Mission: Indiana
Tuition Free and
Faith-Filled
The decision made by Mother and the General Council to expand the
Congregation’s “mission field” is one that is always guided by the Holy
Spirit. Within the past five years the Community has been able to go in
several directions, from Minnesota to Louisiana and then on to Georgia and
Rhode Island. Our most recent stretch is to the Diocese of Lafayette in
Carmel, Indiana where Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish is living a total
commitment in service of the Church. The programs they support and the
spiritual energy they have generated speak of a spirit of dedication. It
is an environment in which the sisters will be at home, where the
apostolate can flourish and the faith be fully nourished.
Located in a northern Indianapolis suburb, the parish was founded in 1955
and numbers about 3,000 families. The K-8th elementary school has an
enrollment of 680 students. The parish totally funds the school, making it
tuition-free for all students. In addition to this rather incredible fact,
the parish supports a small rural parish school nearby, as well as a
mission school in Haiti.
It is no surprise that such vibrancy finds it origin in devotion. Most
recently Mount Carmel Parish built a Perpetual Adoration Chapel where
hundreds of people come regularly to pray. The Year of the Eucharist is an
appropriate time for this new mission for our sisters.
Mount Carmel Parish is not new to the Dominican Sisters. For years the
girls from St. Cecilia Academy have been attending Destination Jesus, a
Eucharistic youth retreat that is held annually in this parish for over
700 high school students from in and outside of the city.
Father Richard Doerr and Monsignor John Duncan have taken seriously Pope
John Paul’s call for the New Evangelization. The Congregation is happy to
support them in the work of Catholic education as Sister Mary Anne, Sister
Mary Jacinta and Sister Cecilia Joseph prepare to begin their new
assignment this fall. |
