Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger of Germany was elected the 265th Pope on April 19, 2005, and took the name Benedict XVI.  The newly elected Pontiff commented, "After our great pope, John Paul II, the cardinals have elected me, a simple, humble worker in God's vineyard."  Viva il Papa!

The Dominican Sisters of Saint Cecilia were represented in Rome in 1998 when Mother Rose Marie, Sister Marian, Sister Mary Angelica, and Sister Catherine Joseph studied there.  Before class one day, the four walked up the street to attend Mass celebrated by Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger.  After Mass, the Cardinal visited with our Sisters until they had to excuse themselves to go to class.  In the conversation, the Cardinal stressed how important it was that Dominicans maintain doctrinal integrity.

Sister Mary Benedict expressed her great enthusiasm for both the selection of the new Pontiff and his name choice.  Besides sharing a name, Pope Benedict XVI and Sister Mary Benedict also share their age and a Bavarian heritage.  Sister Mary Benedict has always admired the new Pontiff and his teachings.

As the crowds waited in anticipation in Saint Peter’s Square, the Sisters waited in anticipation in front of the TV in the Professed Community Room.

On their way home from summer school this past July, some of our Sisters had the opportunity to speak with Cardinal Ratzinger on the Feast of Saint Bonaventure. When the Sisters mentioned that Father Rock is their Chaplain, the Cardinal expressed his fondness for Father, who worked in the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith from 1990-1995. Before departing, Cardinal Ratzinger imparted to the Sisters his blessing.
