Storm Damage to the Roof
Saint Cecilia Convent – Nashville, TN
July 13, 2004

On the evening of July 13, 2004, a storm with winds of tornado proportions hit Nashville.  The "Convent on a Hill" was not spared.  A large section of the roof was lifted from the building, and sent crashing to the ground below.  The dormitories, directly under the damaged roof, were left in shambles as large beams came crashing down through the rafters, leaving many "sky lights" in the ceiling.  Fortunately, no one was injured - the Blessed Mother continues to keep her mantle over each of the Sisters.

An aerial photo showing the large section of the roof that must be repaired.  After damage is assessed, workers prepare to cover the exposed area to protect the rooms below from rain.  Presently, a tarp (not completely waterproof) covers the damaged roof.

The dormitories, where the younger sisters sleep, were left in shambles

One sister was in her bed when the roof fell in on her pillow, moments after she sat upright.

Many Sisters spend hours trying to keep the water from leaking through the floor, down to lower levels. Water leaks around electrical areas,
causing a major safety concern.

Sisters empty bucket after bucket of dirty rainwater out the window.

Offices on lower levels must be evacuated when it rains because of water seepage.
Above, even the office of the Prioress General does not escape without much water damage.

The damaged dormitories are currently closed and awaiting much-needed repair.
The photo below shows the ceiling of the dormitory, where work on the roof is in progress.
