Painting in the Refectory

by Sr. Mary Angelica, O.P.

On the wall at the open end of the refectory “horseshoe” is a painting done by Sister Mary Angelica depicting an incident in Dominican history when the brethren were without food.  Dominic instructed them to have faith and to be seated.  Before long two angels appeared and proceeded to distribute bread to the community beginning with the youngest first.  This has led to the tradition of serving the food to the youngest at the table first, and ending with the superior.
