St. Vincent de Paul School
Founded 1927, Denver, Colorado
Archdiocese of Denver

There was great excitement when Mother Christine announced on Christmas Eve, 1995 that the Congregation had accepted Archbishop J. Francis Stafford's invitation to take a school in Denver, Colorado -- the farthest mission from the Motherhouse in Nashville yet founded, and the first one west of the Mississippi River.

Our sisters made a smooth transition into Saint Vincent de Paul School, to the great delight of the pastor, parishioners, faculty, staff and students.  The school was first staffed by the Sisters of Loretto in 1927.

The first convent of the Nashville Dominicans was located a short walk from the school on the grounds of the Pope John Paul II Center for the New Evangelization, the former Saint Thomas Seminary, in a building which used to house sisters who cooked for the seminarians.  Sister Mary Angela, Sister Mary Dolores and the other "pioneer sisters" on the Denver mission did considerable work to renovate the space provided into a functional convent.

On February 18, 1997, Pope John Paul II appointed Most Rev. Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M. Cap. archbishop of Denver. He was installed on April 7, 1997. One of his many accomplishments has been the establishment of St. John Vianney Theological Seminary along with the Archdiocesan Missionary Seminary, Redemptoris Mater (dedicated 2004). The archdiocese is blessed with the presence of many men in pursuit of servant ministry within the diaconate and priesthood.

In 2004, archbishop Chaput appointed Dr. Richard (Dick) Thompson as Superintendent of Catholic Schools. He is assisted by Associate Superintendent Sister ElizabethYoung, S.C.L. The Office of Catholic Schools supervises, regulates and supports forty elementary schools and two secondary schools. Three private elementary and three private secondary schools also reside in the archdiocese.

St. Vincent de Paul School is one of the Catholic schools that offers religious formation and educational development to its students.

Economically, St. Vincent de Paul School has a diverse population of families ranging from lower middle class to upper middle class. The majority of students come from traditional two-parent households.

One strong trait of St. Vincent de Paul families is parent volunteerism. Parents also participate in leadership roles as members of Home and School Association or may be chosen to serve on the School Advisory Council.

St. Vincent de Paul School employs 29 licensed teachers, two full-tome licensed administrators, and two full-time office staff personnel along with several part-time aids for the various classrooms. The Congregation is pleased to participate in the work of the Church in Colorado.
