Overbrook School
Founded 1936, Nashville, Tennessee
Diocese of Nashville

Overbrook School has long held a place in the heart of the Congregation. In 1923 Mother Scholastica Breen purchased the Overbrook property, formerly the Warner Estate, with its beautiful residence, for $180,000. It was here, in 1926, that the sisters began a “school of expression” whose purpose was to teach music and art. The school did not succeed, but after several years of debate as to whether to sell the property, the Council decided in 1933 to keep the land for an eventual move of the Academy from the Motherhouse. In 1936, Overbrook grade school opened in the large house on the estate, beginning the year with nine students and ending it with twenty-one. By the 1940’s, the school, which by this time had a fully operating farm on the property, was flourishing and at capacity with boys and girls in all eight grades. In 1954, the children receiving instruction from St. Cecilia Academy were moved to the Overbrook campus, beginning the first year with grades nine and ten, with the addition of subsequent grades in the years that followed.

Overbrook School has always had a unique spirit. More than simply an institution of learning, it is a environment where a child feels loved and where the energy and interest of parents and a committed faculty of religious and lay teachers combine in a tangible way. Music and art continue to be a hallmark of the school, along with an award winning forensic team. Overbrook students are provided with a challenging curriculum that is enhanced by technology. Most importantly, religious traditions and spiritual formation are fostered across the entire program, effectively preparing young people for life both in this world and in the next.

Overbrook is accredited through the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
