John Carroll Catholic High School
Founded 1946, Birmingham, Alabama
Diocese of Birmingham

Surprisingly, John Carroll Catholic High School is named not for the First Bishop of Baltimore, the primal see in the U. S., but for a generous Catholic layman in Birmingham who helped realize a dream. From the time he was consecrated for the then Archdiocese of Mobile-Birmingham in 1927, Archbishop Thomas Toolen had wanted a Catholic high school for the city of Birmingham. There were no funds available to build a school, but in the 1940's a Mr. John Carroll, an influential and wealthy layman, began an organization called The Friends of Catholic Education so that there could be a Catholic high school for the city. Construction began in November, 1946 on Highland Avenue, and John Carroll High School opened its doors on September 8, 1947.

For almost fifty years, the handsome dark brick complex on Highland Avenue served generations of Birmingham's Catholic secondary school students and was a landmark in the Southside section of Birmingham. But by the 1980's, aging buildings and space for student parking were becoming increasingly problematic. In 1989 Bishop Raymond Boland announced plans for the construction of a new facility in Homewood, on Lakeshore Parkway. Classes began at the present John Carroll complex in August, 1992.

In 1998 the Congregation was able to respond to Bishop David Foley's request for us to join the faculty at John Carroll. After a warm welcome the sisters have enjoyed their collaboration with a dedicated group of educators for the benefit of a high-spirited group of students.
