Domus Sanctae Mariae Guadalupe
Founded 1997, Rome, Italy

In the fall of 1997, four Nashville Dominican sisters set out for Rome to enroll in theological studies at the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas (the Angelicum). Earlier that same year, the Council of Major Superiors of Women Religious in the United States had initiated plans for a House of Studies to be established in Rome for CMSWR member congregations. Since the house would not be ready until the following autumn, our sisters were offered hospitality by the Religious Sisters of Mercy of Alma. They lived on Borgo Pio, a street offering a taste of Italian culture in the shadow of the Vatican.

By the fall of 1998, the CMSWR's House of Studies, Domus Sanctae Mariae, was ready for its first students. These included two St. Cecilia Dominicans, Sister Catherine Joseph Droste and Sister Mary Angelica Neenan, one Carmelite sister from Alhambra, California and a Sister of Mercy of Alma, Michigan. The House of Studies was dedicated in February, 1999 with Angelo Cardinal Sodano officiating.

Located off Largo Argentina in the heart of centro -- the center of the city – Domus Sanctae Mariae Guadalupe is housed in a large palazzo connected to the Church of San Carlo ai Catinari. The House of Studies is located on the top three floors of the palazzo and has a chapel, library, refectory, kitchen, and twenty single rooms for student sisters. The ideal location of this House of Studies places the students within walking distance of a number of the major pontifical universities and the Vatican.

In the heart of the Church the Sisters study, pray and enjoy numerous cultural and religious opportunities. They participate in canonizations, Vatican celebrations and meetings of religious. Plans are underway for the hosting of a catechetical site at a major basilica during World Youth Day 2000.
